Phwedo Spends Night in Cell as Police Confirm Defilement Case

Police have confirmed the arrest of Lilongwe-based actor Tumpe Mtaya, popularly known as Phwedo, on allegations of engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor.
Mtaya was arrested yesterday on 22 April 2025 after the minor’s mother reported the matter to police.
Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Inspector Hastings Chigalu confirmed the development and said the arrest was made following a formal complaint.
“We have indeed arrested and are keeping Mr. Mtaya in custody at Area 3 Police Station on allegations that he was involved sexually with a minor,” Chigalu said.
He added that the suspect will remain in custody pending his court appearance within 48 hours, where he is expected to be formally charged.
Mtaya rose to fame for his role as Phwedo in the movie School Days. He has also starred in the upcoming film Welcome to Maula Prison, set to premiere next month.
Following his arrest, Netizens have suggested that the arrest has been faked just to promote their anticipating movie premier and they are describing it as a stunt.
