Man Jailed 18 Years for Sexually Assaulting Mentally Ill Teen in Nkhata Bay

The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Nkhata Bay District has sentenced a 36-year-old man from Phalombe District to 18 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl with a mental health condition.
Prosecutor Andrew Singini told the court that the accused, who lives next door to the girl’s home, committed the offence in January this year when he took advantage of her after her family had left the house.
Mr. Singini urged the court to impose a stiffer sentence, arguing that the accused exploited the girl’s vulnerability instead of protecting her.
Senior Resident Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda agreed with the prosecution and handed down an 18-year prison sentence.
