An angry mob in Mazabuka’s Stage Two Compound took justice into their own hands Wednesday evening after apprehending a suspected child defiler. Victor Mabebo, 34, a local ex-convict popularly known as “Mu Soldier,” faces allegations of defiling a 9-year-old girl earlier that afternoon.
Police reports indicate the incident occurred between 15:00 and 18:00 hours when Mabebo allegedly lured the minor to his house under the pretense of giving her K5. The victim had been sent by her stepmother to buy nsunko (a local snack) in Mulonga Extension.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as residents stormed Mabebo’s hideout, where he had reportedly been staying since last week. The mob subjected him to severe beatings with stones and sticks before police intervention.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka confirmed the suspect’s arrest and disclosed that Mabebo and the victim’s stepmother were known drinking companions in the community.
Gender-based violence activist Gloria Sialubala praised the community’s vigilance but cautioned against mob justice. “While we commend their stance against defilement, we urge residents to let the law take its course,” Sialubala stated.
The victim is receiving medical attention as investigations continue. Mabebo remains in police custody awaiting formal charges.
