Commissioner of Police for the South East Region, Dr. Mlowoka Noel Kayira, has highlighted a growing mistrust between residents of high density areas and the police, attributing it to unequal service delivery.

Speaking after receiving his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Administration during the University of Malawi graduation in Zomba, Dr. Kayira noted that his research on community policing revealed significant disparities in how police serve different communities.

He pointed out that people in affluent areas tend to receive quicker and more efficient responses from the police, while those in poorer, high density areas often feel neglected. He said this fuels dissatisfaction and erodes public confidence in the police.

“The police tend to respond very quickly to people in the affluent areas than they respond to people in high density areas. As a result, people in those high density areas are dissatisfied with the police work,” he said.

Dr. Kayira emphasized the need for a shift in mindset, behavior, and attitude among both police officers and community policing groups. He believes such reforms are essential in restoring public trust and improving policing outcomes across all communities.
