Grezelda Jeffrey, who joined the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) last year, has won the by-election in the Nkhotakota-Chia constituency, located in Nkhotakota District.

MCP district chairman Fredrick Kachembwe confirmed that Jeffrey won by a margin of 729 votes, defeating the incumbent MP Brainax Kaise, who received 13 votes, Ousimane Chunga with 15 votes, and former Malawi Electoral Commissioner (MEC) commissioner Olivia Mchaju Liwewe, who secured 9 votes.

The by-election was held outside the constituency at Chibothera Primary School in Nkhotakota-Nkhula constituency, based on arrangements made by the party for the participating candidates.

This victory means Jeffrey will represent the MCP as the parliamentary candidate for the constituency in the September 16 general election.

However, the election day was marred by violence. Around noon, unknown assailants attacked Jeffrey’s vehicle, smashing its windows at Kalimanjira Shopping Centre, located within the constituency she represents.
