Minister of Mining, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, has revealed that the country holds large deposits of gold, particularly in Lilongwe, but these riches are often not openly discussed.

Speaking at a mining conference in Lilongwe focused on the delays affecting mining operations, Ng’oma also disclosed that he learned from foreign sources that Dowa has vast graphite deposits, along with other undisclosed minerals in various parts of the country.

He expressed concern that some individuals are deliberately hiding information about the country’s mineral wealth for personal gain. Ng’oma promised that the government would put a stop to this secrecy.

Opening the conference, Vice President Michael Usi emphasized that the time for endless meetings is over  Malawians now expect to see real change and results.

The three-day conference brings together top government officials, mining experts, and private sector players under the coordination of the Presidential Delivery Unit. They aim to find solutions to key challenges facing Malawi’s mining sector, such as poor road infrastructure, unreliable electricity supply, and delayed regulatory processes.
