Vendors in Mzuzu are expected to hold demonstrations today to express their frustration with the government’s silence on their concerns about the rising cost of goods.
The vendors say the government has failed to address the increasing prices of essential items they sell, making it difficult for them to do business. They also accuse authorities of not doing enough to stop foreign nationals from engaging in small-scale businesses that locals are capable of doing.
As of now, many shops, markets, and offices in Mzuzu are closed. Police have been deployed to several key locations around the city, and a military Tata vehicle has been seen patrolling some streets.
A heavy police presence has been noted at the Zigwagwa Market, where the vendors have gathered to protest. Business activities have come to a standstill in many parts of the city, with most shops remaining shut.
