A seven-month-old Zambian baby who was trafficked to Mozambique has been safely repatriated, thanks to a successful joint operation between defence and security agencies of Zambia and Mozambique.
The operation also led to the recovery of a 21-year-old Mozambican national living with albinism who had been trafficked and sold in Zambia.
Mozambique’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Casimiro Agusto Mueio, revealed these developments during the closing ceremony of the Senior Officials Meeting part of the 13th Session of the Zambia-Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security held at Twangale Park in Chilanga District.
Mueio praised the ongoing cooperation between the two nations, citing the sharing of intelligence and coordinated operations as key tools in tackling transnational crimes and ensuring the safety of citizens along the shared border.
Zambia’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Maambo Haamaundu, underscored the importance of implementing the meeting’s resolutions to produce tangible results in citizen protection.
Zambia’s Minister of Defence, Ambrose Lufuma, reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to regional peace and security, describing Mozambique as a strategic economic partner.
Mozambique’s Minister of Home Affairs, Paulo Chachine, called on customs authorities from both countries to speed up the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to activate the Chanida One Stop Border Post, which would facilitate smoother cross-border movement of goods and people.
