Renowned actor, Tumpe ‘Phwedo’ Mtaya, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of defiling a 15-year-old girl and child abduction.
Phwedo is being accused of having committed the crime with the 15-year-old from 18 February to 22 February 2025 and having custody of the minor without consent on the said days.
Defence lawyer Mkwima Tchizi has asked the State for further disclosure of information by providing a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) student Identification Card or Maneb records, which indicate the age of the victim, who sat for MSCE exams in 2024.
The defence has also asked for the State to produce an age assessment report. The court has since adjourned the defence’s application hearing to 16 May 2025.
