
ESCOM Disconnects Power at Machinga District Council Over 25 Million Outstanding Bill

The electricity supply cooperation of Malawi (ESCOM) has disconnected electricity at Machinga district council office for having an outstanding bill of 25 million Kwacha.
Machinga District Commissioner Rodrick Mateauma, has confirmed the development saying that the electricity were disconnected four days ago.He said that currently the office is using generators in order to make sure that the operations in essential departments like finance should not be affected the time they are trying to sort out the bill with ESCOM and reconnect the electricity .
“As a council we have written a letter to ESCOM which is requesting for a prepaid meter so that it can help us monitor and control electricity usage,” Said Mateauma.
He also added that previously they were using electricity of not more than 1.8 million per month but from January to March the bill increased to 3 million and they are now surprise that between March and April the bill has increased to 25 million.
As of now ESCOM has not yet commented on the matter.
