Balaka District Hospital is facing problems due to high electricity bills. The district  commissioner Tamanya Harawa, said they used to spend about K4 million each month on electricity but since March the bills gone up to over K7 million.

The District Commissioner for Balaka said they are trying to discuss with the authorities from ESCOM department to review the charges and  they also want the electricity tax to be removed from the hospitals bills.

Health activist Maziko Matemba said government companies like ESCOM and the water boards should be part of budget planning meetings for councils.

The hospital is also looking for other  alternative power sources like solar energy to minimize electricity bills.

The hospital provides services to more than 317,000 people from Balaka.
