South Africa-based Malawian forward Gabadinho Mhango has taken legal action against his BetWay Premiership club, Marumo Gallants, over an image rights dispute, claiming a total of R828,000 (approximately K82.8 million). The case is scheduled to be heard by the Johannesburg High Court.
Mhango confirmed to The Nation that he has filed the suit, citing unauthorized use of his image by the club for promotional purposes. According to information gathered by Wa Ganyu, the dispute stems from incidents in December 2024 and March 2025.
In December, Marumo Gallants allegedly used a photo of Mhango in club regalia to promote a match against Orlando Pirates. The issue escalated further in March.
“On March 14, 2025, the club shared an image of the team sheet, which reflects my name in the starting line-up as number 7 to promote the upcoming fixture,” said Mhango, adding that this is why he has moved to court for exploiting his image rights without payment.
Mhango’s legal move underscores a growing awareness among players about the importance of image rights and fair compensation in professional football.
