Police in Lilongwe at Lingadzi, have arrested twelve peoples believed to be behind a series of armed robberies across Malawi’s capital city. The arrests come after weeks of investigations into criminal activities targeting businesses and residents in various locations.

Deputy Spokesperson for Lingadzi Police, Sergeant Maria Kumwenda confirmed the suspects are connected to robberies at Gravity Mall SANA, Asterisk Systems Limited, and residential areas including Njerwa, Area 25 and Area 43. The criminal group is also linked to a recent K14 million robbery at a Burundian national’s residence.

During the operation, police recovered crucial evidence including a pistol, a toy gun used in the robberies, and some stolen property. Investigators revealed the suspects had confessed to planning additional robberies in Zomba District, specifically targeting Namadzi and Thondwe areas.

“We have successfully disrupted a dangerous criminal network operating in the city,” said Sergeant Kumwenda. “The recovery of weapons and their confession about planned future crimes helped us build a strong case.”

The twelve suspects are currently in custody and will soon appear before the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court to face formal charges. Police have assured the public they are continuing investigations to determine if the group has connections to other unsolved crimes in the region.

Meanwhile, Police have urged residents and business owners to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to Lingadzi Police Station. The police have also advised against keeping large sums of money at home or business premises.
