Principal Resident Magistrate Benjami Chulu has denied bail to Lin Yunhua, a Chinese national recently arrested on corruption charges.
Lin, who was previously serving a 14-year jail term for wildlife crimes, was arrested following allegations that he attempted to bribe prison officials in a bid to secure life outside prison while still serving his sentence.
According to reports, Lin was released earlier this year under a presidential pardon, despite being sentenced in 2021. However, his recent arrest stems from separate corruption allegations linked to his time in custody.
During the bail hearing, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) prosecutor Peter Sambani welcomed the court’s decision, stating that keeping the suspect in custody would help ensure a smooth trial process.
Lin’s defence team declined to comment following the ruling.
The case has been adjourned to May 4 for further directions.
