Woman Arrested in Lilongwe for Faking Kidnapping to Demand Ransom

Lingadzi Police Station in Lilongwe is keeping in custody a 40-year-old woman identified as Febbie Robert for allegedly lying that she was kidnapped and demanding ransom for the same in the city.

Lingadzi Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer Maria Kumwenda said that on 13 May 2025, Febbie left her home to sell sugarcane as her daily business.

On the said date at around 06:00 hours, Febbie (the suspect) called her husband, claiming unknown individuals had kidnapped her.

She further informed her husband that the kidnappers were demanding a ransom of K500,000 to release her and 20 other people she claimed were being held captive in a house where 14 people had been killed.

Following her husband’s complaint, police detectives launched an investigation and discovered that Febbie was actually in Kamwendo, Mchinji district.

Upon her arrest, Febbie admitted that her entire story was a fabrication. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon and answer a charge of giving false information.
