The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has ordered the Ministry of Health to suspend the recruitment of Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs) in all district councils amid an ongoing corruption investigation.

In a restriction notice dated May 21, 2025, and signed by Acting Director General Gerald Hillary Chilomba, the ACB invoked Section 23(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act to stop the process.

“Take notice that you shall not, without my written consent, deal with or allow to proceed with the recruitment of Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs) positions at all Local Councils in the Republic of Malawi,” the order reads in part.

The Ministry had advertised the positions on April 5, with interviews scheduled for May 24. It has yet to comment on the suspension.
