The Second Grade Magistrate’s Court in Mangochi has sentenced a 31-year-old woman, Cecelia Liwotcha, to three years in prison for stealing property worth K12 million from her sister-in-law.

According to the court, Liwotcha had been stealing items from her sister-in-law  who resides in South Africa  since last year. She was entrusted to look after the sister-in-law’s belongings in Malawi.

Among the stolen items were a motorcycle, a vehicle engine and parts, tins of paint, door frames, and other valuable goods. Some of the stolen property was later recovered by police from a local trader.

The state prosecutor told the court that Liwotcha’s actions were a serious betrayal of trust and deserved a stiff penalty, even though she pleaded for leniency, citing concern for her two-year-old child.

In his ruling, Magistrate Joshua Chirambo sided with the prosecution and sentenced Liwotcha to three years in prison on charges of stealing a motorcycle and other goods.
