Mulanje Magistrate’s Court Fails to Sentence Convicted Officers and Businessperson

Mulanje Magistrate’s Court yesterday failed to sentence two police officers and a businessperson who had been found guilty of causing the amputation of both arms of a 13-year-old boy in Mulanje.
Last month, Senior Resident Magistrate Gift Msume convicted the trio of causing grievous bodily harm and neglecting their official duty to protect the child. Sentencing was scheduled for May 22, 2025.
However, when the day arrived, the magistrate did not appear in court to deliver the judgment. The unexpected absence left State and defence lawyers, along with members of the public who had gathered in support of the victim, in a state of confusion and suspense.
“We are failing to get hold of the magistrate to find out why he did not show up. But there must be good reasons,” said Josephine Gwaza, Director of Criminal Litigation at the State Advocate Chambers, who is leading the prosecution team.
It remains unclear when sentencing will now take place.
