Two sisters from Chipangali District in Zambia’s Eastern Province are fighting for their lives after being attacked by a swarm of bees under unusual circumstances.

Helen Nyirenda, 35, and her younger sister Rita, 31, were stung repeatedly while walking home from visiting a relative near a stream in Madzi-a-tuwa. Their mother, Helen Mbewe, said the bees chased the women for nearly three kilometres before the attack mysteriously stopped at their doorstep.

“In a desperate attempt to escape the swarm, my daughters removed their clothes hoping the bees would stop,” Mbewe told local media. “But the bees only disappeared after they entered the house, where they collapsed.”

The sisters were rushed to Madzi-a-tuwa Health Centre, where they remain in critical condition.

The family suspects witchcraft may be involved due to the persistence and strange nature of the attack. Police or health authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the incident.
