Malawians continue to face a significant sugar shortage which is leading to increase in prices across the country. The price of sugar has gone up to as much as K5000 per packet in some shops around the capital, Lilongwe.
Amid its scarcity, Minister of Trade Vitumbiko Mumba is expected to officially open the 2025 sugar production season at Salima company located in Salima district.
According to the company chairperson Wester Kosamu, the company is expected to produce 22,0000 metric tons of sugar this year and this production is aimed at increasing supply and reducing prices of sugar across the country.
With local production which are about to start there is hope that the crisis can come to an end and stabilize the prices.
