Police in Ntchisi have arrested 12 young men working for the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) for allegedly tying up two company officials and force them to pay their wages.

The suspects have been identified as Yobe Frackson, Andrew Banda, Moses Kaluba, Charles Chibwana, Emmanuel Masanje, Thomas Kambani, Godfrey Banda, Siko Kasambeni and Desire Kachigodi.

According to Ntchisi Police spokesperson Salome Zgambo, the incident happened on 24 May 2025 and they were told about the case which made them to quickly step in and arrest the suspects.

Speaking on the matter, Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM) said they already handed over all responsibility related to the project to Kaponda Electoral Rate which was in charge for the project.

However, Kaponda claimed they had not yet received any funds from ESCOM to pay the workers.

Meanwhile the suspects are being kept in the police custody and are expected to be taken to court soon. They will answer charges relating to causing violence at workplace and also violating rights of others.
