Two Men Jailed for Possessing Kudu Horns Worth K7 Million in Balaka

Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Balaka has sentenced two men to prison for possessing endangered species without a licence.
Bright Chiwaya, 39, was given 60 months imprisonment with hard labour, while Ishmael Benard, 24, received 48 months.
The two were found with two Kudu horns worth K7 million at Kapile Village in Balaka without a licence or certificate of ownership.
They pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 110 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.
In mitigation, they asked for leniency, claiming to be family breadwinners.However, Senior Resident Magistrate Joshua Nkhono emphasised the seriousness of the offence and imposed stiff sentences.
Chiwaya is from Manjawira Village, T/A Tsikulamoyo in Ntcheu, and Benard is from Kamvalutope Village, STA Matola in Balaka.
