Sitting Members of Parliament in Mzimba today boycotted the Mmbelwa District Council full council meeting.
The meeting was held to discuss and approve the 2025–2030 District Development Plan (DDP).

Their absence follows a recent Constitutional Court ruling that stripped MPs of control over the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the Water Resources Fund.

The court also ruled it unconstitutional for MPs to vote during full council meetings.

Additionally, MPs were removed from roles in selecting, implementing, and monitoring CDF projects.

The MP for Mzimba South, who usually attends such meetings, confirmed the boycott was due to the ruling.

He said the ruling limits their involvement in council matters.

Despite their absence, the council approved the K233 billion development plan.

District Commissioner Rodgers Newa described the plan as a blueprint for the district’s development.
