The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has confirmed the arrest of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the North, Jappie Mhango, in connection with alleged abuse of office during his tenure as Minister of Transport and Public Works.
According to a statement released by the ACB, Mhango is accused of authorizing the sale of government houses at undervalued prices—some as low as MK2.9 million—between 2016 and 2017. The properties belonged to the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, and the sale reportedly benefited Cuthbert Mhango and 11 others, resulting in significant financial loss to the government.
The ACB further alleges that on April 11, 2022, while at their Mzuzu offices, Mhango provided false information to investigators. The statement reads:
“He stated that he does not know the landlord of the house rented by his second wife, Miss Thokozire Wanda, in Chimaliro, Mzuzu City. However, investigations revealed that the said house was purchased from the Ministry of Transport and Public Works during his tenure as Minister and is owned by his direct relative, Cuthbert Mhango.”
The Bureau has indicated that Mhango will be taken to court once the process of recording his statement is completed.
