Police in Mwanza District have arrested 48-year-old Ellen Deriki for allegedly allowing her 10-year-old son and his friends to steal K1 million.
According to Mwanza Police spokesperson Hope Kasakula, the boy and his friends had been stealing from a local businessman, Emmanuel Chilapondwa. Deriki is accused of receiving the stolen money from the children without taking any action to stop them.
Kasakula stated on Sunday that police received a report after the boy was caught stealing. During questioning, the boy confessed that he had been handing the money over to his mother.
Following this revelation, Deriki led police officers to a bush where part of the stolen money had been hidden. Upon arrival, police recovered K165,000.
Authorities are continuing their search for the boy’s accomplices, who are currently on the run.
