A total of 52 inmates across various correctional facilities in Malawi are currently sitting for the 2025 Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) examinations, prison authorities have confirmed.

According to Assistant Superintendent Steve Meke, the spokesperson for the Malawi Prison Services, 75 inmates initially registered for the exams. However, only 52 have proceeded to write them, as some were released from custody before the exam period began.

“These examinations are being written in several prisons across the country, including Maula Prison in Lilongwe, Mzuzu Prison, Zomba’s Mountain View, Mzimba Prison, Kachere Women’s Prison, Chichiri Prison, and Bvumbwe Prison,” said Meke.

He emphasized that the opportunity for inmates to pursue education while incarcerated is part of ongoing rehabilitation efforts within the prison system.

“We are committed to providing inmates with access to education and vocational training. This helps equip them with valuable skills that can aid their reintegration into society upon release,” Meke said.

He further called on various stakeholders to continue partnering with the government in supporting prison education programs, noting that such initiatives contribute positively to both individual transformation and national development.

Meke also expressed gratitude to all organizations and individuals who have been instrumental in supporting education and rehabilitation efforts within Malawi’s correctional facilities.
