One of Malawi’s top football referees, Godfrey Nkhakananga, is set to officiate the opening match of the 2025 COSAFA Senior Men’s Championship between Mauritius and Zimbabwe, scheduled for Wednesday in South Africa.
Nkhakananga has traveled to the tournament alongside fellow Malawian referee Lameck Phiri from Mzuzu. The two are part of a selected panel of referees appointed by the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) to officiate matches during the tournament, which is being held in Bloemfontein and will run until 22 June.
Notably, Nkhakananga is also listed among the referees who will provide decisions with the support of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology during the competition.
Meanwhile, Malawi’s national team, the Flames, will also be participating in the tournament. They have been drawn in Group C alongside Angola, Lesotho, and Namibia, and are expected to depart for South Africa on Wednesday.
