Police in Southern Province of Zambia have launched a manhunt after a 15-year-old Grade 10 pupil was defiled by an unidentified intruder in Kabobola Compound.

The horrific incident occurred on the night of Sunday, June 2, 2025, in accommodation the victim shares with her sister near their school.

According to Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka, the attack happened around 23:00 hours when the victim’s elder sister temporarily left their bedroom to study elsewhere. “The suspect took advantage of the situation, entering the room and assaulting the young girl,” Commissioner Daka explained. “He used force to silence her during the attack before fleeing the scene.”

The victim, whose identity is being protected, is originally from Nega Nega village but had been boarding in Mazabuka to attend school. Medical personnel at Mazabuka District Hospital have confirmed the assault through examination, while local social welfare officers are providing counseling support to the traumatized teenager.

Commissioner Daka emphasized that the victim believes she could identify her attacker. “We are following several leads and urge community members with any information to come forward immediately,” he stated. “This was a particularly cowardly attack on a vulnerable young scholar that we will investigate thoroughly.”

The incident has sparked outrage in Mazabuka District, with local education officials calling for improved security measures at private boarding accommodations used by students. “We must ensure the safety of all learners, especially those living away from home,” said District Education Board Secretary Patricia Munkombwe.

Police have increased patrols in Kabobola Compound and surrounding areas as the search for the suspect continues. Authorities are appealing to anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area on Sunday night to contact the nearest police station.

This case comes as Zambia continues to strengthen its fight against gender-based violence, with recent legal reforms imposing harsher penalties for crimes against minors. The Mazabuka case is being treated as particularly serious due to the victim’s age and student status.
