The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Masauko Chamkakala, has directed that the case involving convicted Chinese national Lin Yunhua accused of attempting to bribe a judge and public officers be transferred to the High Court for trial.
The decision was made just as the case was about to proceed to full trial before the Principal Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe.
Lin Yunhua, who is currently serving a 14-year sentence at Maula Prison for serious wildlife trafficking crimes, was convicted in 2020 as the alleged kingpin of a transnational illegal wildlife syndicate.
The new charges relate to alleged attempts by Yunhua to interfere with the justice system through bribery an act seen as a threat to judicial integrity.
During a brief court appearance on Wednesday, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) prosecutor Peter Sambani informed reporters that the DPP had exercised his constitutional powers to move the case to the High Court, citing public interest and the complexity of the matter.
“This case touches on the credibility of the justice system itself, which is why the DPP has taken this step,” said Sambani.
The date for the High Court hearing is expected to be announced soon.
