Old Mutual (Blantyre) Foundation Trust has officially handed over the newly built two classroom blocks at Maliya Primary School in Blantyre and Chazinga Primary School in Phalombe worth MK360 Million under the Post-cyclone Freddy recovery project.
The project also included the rehabilitation of damaged school infrastructure at Chithumbwi Primary School in Phalombe and Chitedze Primary School in Mulanje.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony held at Maliya Primary School in Blantyre, Old Mutual Foundation Trust Chairperson Taonga Manda said the company is deeply excited that the project is finally completed.
“As Old Mutual we are deeply excited that the project has finally been completed. This is actually the symbolic handover of many projects that Old Mutual is carrying out across the country aimed at improving the living conditions of many learners.
“Apart from this, Old Mutual Blantyre Foundation Trust is supporting over 300 learners in National Secondary Schools under its bursary program,” said Manda.
On her part CARE Malawi Country Director Pamela Kuwali hailed Old Mutual for trusting the organization to oversee the whole project.
“As a partner of Old Mutual our role has to construct the schools. We have been an implementing partner and Old Mutual provided the funds but we collaboratively worked with them. CARE Malawi together with our contractor designed the schools and constructed them,” said Kuwali.
Cyclone Freddy, which struck Malawi in March 2023, claimed over 1,000 lives and caused extensive damage to homes, schools and hospitals.
Old Mutual initially responded with a donation of assorted relief items worth MK60 million through Red Cross Malawi.
Old Mutual (Blantyre) Foundation Trust is a Philanthropic arm of the Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited, a leading financial service provider in the country.
