
Man Jailed 4 Years for Stealing 5kg of Flour and 25kg Bag of Charcoal in Mulanje

The Mulanje Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man, Cosmas Chiwambo, to four years in prison after being found guilty of theft.
Mulanje Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Constable Hawa Juma, the conviction follows a report made by Constable Paul Nsindo, indicating that the incident occurred on May 20, 2025.
The court heard that Chiwambo was caught entering the complainant’s house by a security guard. Upon realizing he had been seen, the suspect fled the scene.
Later, the homeowner discovered that a 5kg bag of maize flour and a 25kg bag of charcoal were missing from the house. Police investigations led to the arrest of Chiwambo, who eventually confessed to the crime.
In her ruling, Senior Resident Magistrate Gloria Mwatiwamba stated that the custodial sentence was meant to deter others from committing similar offenses. She handed down a four-year prison sentence.
Cosmas Chiwambo hails from Mwamadi Village, under Traditional Authority Chikumbu in Mulanje District.
