The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has confirmed that four individuals have so far collected nomination papers for the upcoming 2025 presidential election, signaling the start of what is expected to be a competitive race.

According to MEC’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the latest candidates to collect their nomination forms on Thursday, 12 June 2025, include incumbent President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Adil James Chilungo (Independent), and Kondwani Nankhumwa of the People’s Development Party (PDP).

They join Milward Tobias, an independent candidate who was the first to collect his forms on Wednesday, 11 June 2025.

President Chakwera’s move comes as no surprise, following earlier public declarations of his intent to seek a second term in office. His collection of nomination papers and payment of the K5 million nomination fee to the MCP confirm his official entry into the race.

This development brings the total number of confirmed presidential aspirants who have collected nomination papers to four, as the country prepares for a critical electoral contest.

The MEC is expected to announce the official campaign period and further details in the coming weeks as the nomination process continues.
