Police in Karonga have arrested a 39-year-old man, Medson Mwalughali, for allegedly inflicting serious injuries on a builder, John Bwighane, following a longstanding dispute over unpaid construction work.
According to Karonga Police Public Relations Officer, Margret Msiska, the altercation stems from early 2024 when Mwalughali reportedly hired Bwighane to build a house but failed to pay him upon completion. In retaliation, Bwighane allegedly confiscated Mwalughali’s phone and disappeared.
Msiska said that on June 10, 2025, Bwighane returned to Mwalughali’s residence to return the phone and attempt to settle the matter. However, a violent confrontation ensued.
“The suspect allegedly tied the victim’s hands, poured water on him, and pressed a heated panga knife onto his face,” Msiska said.
Bwighane sustained severe burn injuries and a fractured ankle, and is currently receiving medical treatment at Karonga District Hospital.
Mwalughali is in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of grievous harm, which is contrary to Section 238 of the Penal Code
