Information reaching this publication indicates that fuel scarcity in Blantyre has reached alarming levels, with black market vendors now selling fuel at exorbitant prices—up to K8,000 per litre.
As the official pump price remains at K2,530 per litre, desperate motorists are forced to turn to illegal vendors, where a litre of fuel is going for K8,000. In some cases, with negotiation, the price may drop to K7,000. A 5-litre container, like the one pictured, is reportedly being sold for K40,000.
Frustrated buyers, especially those visiting used car markets, say they are often shocked by the prices. “Once they hear the price, some just close their windows and drive away without a word,” one source said.
With no clear end in sight to the fuel shortages, Malawians continue to bear the brunt as black market dealers take advantage of the crisis.
