The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has once again dismissed rumors suggesting that its leader, Peter Mutharika, is unwell.
Party spokesperson Shadric Namalomba said Mutharika is in good health and is fully prepared to contest in the upcoming elections scheduled for September this year. He added that the party has already paid K10 million to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to register Mutharika’s interest in the race.
Namalomba declined to comment on the former president’s recent trip to South Africa, saying they were avoiding giving attention to speculation that could distort the purpose of the journey.
This clarification comes amid reports that Mutharika travelled to South Africa with his wife, Gertrude, allegedly to seek medical attention.
His absence from public party functions has fueled further speculation. According to recent reports by state broadcaster MBC, some immigration officers confirmed his travel, adding to the public’s curiosity.
Despite the rumors, the DPP insists that their leader is healthy and ready to return to active politics.
