The head of Thawiro Sub-District Hospital in Karonga District, Chimwemwe Kaonga, has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to sell government-issued medicines.

Karonga District Police spokesperson, Margret Msiska, said Kaonga, 38, was arrested on June 14, 2025, at Rukuru Police Station with two bags filled with hospital medicines.

Items found in his possession included gloves, ciprofloxacin, diclofenac, gencin, bufen, benzylpenicillin, nitronidazole, benzathine, Revoke-72 (0.75mg), amoxicillin, Crozid (500mg), gentamicin, fluconazole, zinc oxide, syringes, malaria test kits, HIV test kits, and condoms.

This arrest comes just months after Kaonga was previously detained on January 8, 2025, on suspicion of cohabiting with a 17-year-old student from Nyungwe Community Day Secondary School.

That case was later dropped due to lack of evidence after the girl reportedly fled the hospital before a medical examination could be conducted.

Kaonga is expected to appear before court soon.
