A disturbing drug abuse trend known as ‘bluetoothing’ or ‘hotspotting’ is raising alarm in Lesotho, where young drug users are reportedly injecting themselves not with drugs directly, but with the blood of someone who is already high often on substances like crystal meth.

The practice, which poses severe health risks including the spread of blood-borne diseases, has left families devastated.

One such affected family is that of Pontso Tumisi, whose daughter has fallen victim to bluetoothing. In response, Tumisi founded Mokhosi oa Mangoana, a support group for mothers and caregivers of children battling addiction in Lesotho.

Her efforts aim to raise awareness, support affected families, and push for urgent intervention in what is becoming a growing public health concern.

A recent statistics shows that 68% of high school pupils had used elicit substances
