Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the violent vandalism of the newly constructed Chisiyo Police Unit in Lilongwe and the torching of two police vehicles.
Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu confirmed the arrests and stated that more suspects are expected to be apprehended as investigations continue.
The chaos erupted after two dead bodies, believed to be a Kabaza (motorcycle taxi) operator and a passenger, were discovered in the area, allegedly killed by two men.
Angry residents initially handed over a suspect to police, but tensions escalated when a mob, mostly made up of Kabaza operators, returned demanding the suspect be released into their custody.
Chigalu said the suspect had already been transferred to Lilongwe Police Station for safety, prompting the mob to retaliate violently.
During the unrest, the mob vandalized the police unit, torched two vehicles that had been impounded by traffic police, and looted property including electric wires and computers.
The police also reported damage to the water system at the station.
Authorities say investigations are still underway, and additional arrests are likely.
