Malawi’s Minister of Trade, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, has announced his resignation from the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), citing political divisions and what he describes as “primitive politics” within the party’s executive structure. Despite stepping down from the NEC, Mumba has clarified that he is not leaving the party.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Mumba wrote that his resignation is intended to help him focus on more meaningful issues rather than what he termed “petty battles” and “man-made small-mega battles.”
“It is just a waste of time and I no longer have time for such. Let those that have majored in that type of primitive politics focus on that while I focus on my Constituency. I have one reason for this decision but there is a secondary one (point No.2 in this post) that has strengthened my resolve,” he wrote.
He also raised concerns about the composition of the NEC, criticizing the inclusion of members who did not show interest in contesting during the party’s general convention.
“You cannot have a NEC whereby 80% of co-opted members are those that never expressed interest to contest during Convention. They never paid nomination fees but they are now in NEC. Majority, over 80%, of those that paid hefty nomination fees and heavily campaigned, left out completely,” said Mumba.
In an interview with Zodiak Online, Mumba reiterated that internal political divides within the MCP influenced his decision. However, he emphasized that he remains loyal to the party and pledged to continue supporting President Lazarus Chakwera.
“I will campaign for President Lazarus Chakwera wherever possible,” he affirmed.
The Malawi Congress Party is yet to issue an official statement on Mumba’s resignation.
