United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has denied reports suggesting that his party has formed an electoral alliance with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), dismissing the rumors as baseless and politically motivated.
Speaking during an exclusive interview on Times TV’s Times Exclusive program with Brian Banda, Muluzi clarified that he has never met President Lazarus Chakwera to discuss any form of alliance, including claims that he would be Chakwera’s running mate in the 2025 elections.
“These rumors have been pushed by propagandists, especially from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), ever since I made it clear at the UDF convention in 2024 that we will not play second fiddle in the upcoming elections,” Muluzi stated.
He affirmed his commitment to contesting the presidency, saying he will submit his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) between July 24 and 30, 2025.
Outlining his campaign priorities, Muluzi pledged that, if elected, his administration would immediately focus on addressing the rising cost of living, widespread hunger, and the general lack of economic opportunities—issues he said Malawians have raised during his tours across the country.
“My first priority will be to ensure that people have enough food and money. We need to improve the quality of life for all Malawians,” he said.
Highlighting his experience, Muluzi noted that he joined politics at the age of 25 and will be marking 22 years in public service this year, including 15 years as a Member of Parliament and a minister in various portfolios.
On corruption, Muluzi described himself as a patriot with no tolerance for dishonest conduct, emphasizing that he believes in integrity and cultural values that reject corruption and reputational damage.
