A Zambian peacekeeper serving in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has died following a brutal attack on a UN patrol on June 20, 2025.
The patrol was ambushed by unidentified armed individuals along the Birao-Am Dafock axis in the volatile Vakaga Prefecture, resulting in the death of one peacekeeper and serious injury to another.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the attack, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Government, and the people of Zambia.
In a statement issued by UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Mr. Guterres emphasized that “attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.” He urged Central African authorities to act swiftly to identify and prosecute the perpetrators of what he called a “tragic and unacceptable act.”
The identity of the deceased peacekeeper has not been officially released as authorities continue to inform next of kin.
This incident highlights the dangers faced by peacekeepers working in conflict zones and raises concerns about the ongoing instability in parts of the Central African Republic.
