A political expert has warned opposition parties in Malawi to stop fighting each other and focus on building strong alliances ahead of the September 16 elections.

Victor Chipofya Junior, a political analyst, says if Atupele Muluzi president for United Democratic Front (UDF) decides to form an alliance with the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), it could affect opposition chances.

He reminded Malawians that in 2009, when the UDF worked with the MCP, MCP gained 67% of the votes in Mangochi and 60% in Machinga both UDF strongholds. “This shows that most supporters follow the direction of their leader,” he said.

Chipofya explained that despite strong support in the Eastern Region, the MCP still failed to win government in 2009 because many people in the Central Region voted for the late Bingu wa Mutharika.

He warned that such vote splitting could happen again if the opposition remains divided he also added that even if UDF joins hands with the DPP instead of MCP, not everyone in the party would accept the move.

Chipofya urged opposition political parties to work together and be tolerant in their talks so they can stand a better chance in the coming elections.
