One Dead, 22 Injured in Nkhotakota Road Accident Involving Scania Bus

At least one person has died and 22 others sustained injuries following a road accident involving a Scania bus at Kalimanjira Trading Centre along the Nkhotakota-Salima M5 road.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for Nkhotakota Police Chisomo Chuma, the bus, which was traveling from Mzuzu to Salima, was carrying about 70 passengers at the time of the accident.
Chuma said the driver, James Bwanali, who is among the injured, lost control of the vehicle, causing the bus to veer off the road and crash into two roadside shops.
“The deceased is a woman, aged between 30 and 35, whose identity is yet to be established,” said Chuma. “She sustained severe head injuries and died at the scene.”
Police say the woman boarded the bus at Old Maula area in Chintheche, Nkhatabay District.
The body of the deceased is being kept at Nkhotakota District Hospital mortuary, while the injured passengers are also receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Police investigations into the exact cause of the accident are still underway.
