Demonstrations organized by Citizens for Credible Elections have begun in Blantyre, calling for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja and opposing the use of Smartmatic voting machines in the upcoming elections.

There was confusion at the start, as some protesters gathered at Chichiri Upper Stadium, while the organizers were stationed at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) roundabout along Mandala Road.

Currently, the protestors are marching along Chipembere Highway en route to the Blantyre District Commissioner’s Office, also known as the Governor’s Office.

However, turnout remains low, with police officers currently outnumbering the demonstrators.
