MDF Troops Deployed as Lilongwe Protest Begins

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers have arrived at Lilongwe Community Ground, the starting point of today’s demonstrations in the capital, organized by a group called Citizens for Credible Elections.
The protest, which is also expected to take place in other parts of the country, is aimed at pressuring Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi to resign.
The organisers allege that both Mtalimanja and Mpesi are compromised and therefore unfit to oversee credible elections ahead of the September 16 polls.
