Police at Zalewa in Neno District have arrested a minibus driver and his conductor for allegedly being found in possession of copper wire and water taps suspected to have been stolen.

Neno Police spokesperson Rebecca Msoliza identified the suspects as Assan Bwaila, 54, and Goodson Mpotazingwe, 30, both residents of Balaka District.

The two were traveling in a minibus, registration number NE 6309, from Balaka to Blantyre when they were intercepted at the Zalewa roadblock. A police search uncovered a sack containing copper wire and taps, for which the suspects failed to produce ownership documents.

According to Msoliza, the suspects could not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the origin of the items, prompting their immediate arrest.

She added that police have launched an investigation to uncover what is believed to be a broader syndicate involved in the theft and illegal trade of copper wire and fittings.
