Police in Lilongwe City fired tear gas to disperse a group of machete-wielding men who were loitering around Community Ground, where a protest was taking place.
Before fleeing to Biwi Triangle, the group set two vehicles on fire, both reportedly belonging to protesters.
A police riot control vehicle, commonly known as “Mbaula” (stove), pursued the group as tensions escalated.
The violent disruption has raised concerns about protest safety and public order.
