
Tear Gas Fired as Unrest Follows Demos in Mangochi

Police in Mangochi County have fired tear gas to disperse crowds and are urging residents to return home. This comes after a group of youths began throwing stones and burning tires along Monkey Bay Road, despite the earlier conclusion of a peaceful protest calling for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officials.
That protest had ended more than an hour before the unrest began.
Shops across the county have closed, with traders fearing that the escalating violence may affect their businesses.
Security in the area remains tight, with a heavy police presence on major roads and key locations throughout Mangochi.
