Malawians have taken to social media to express growing frustration over the poor service delivery by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), particularly regarding delayed responses to customer faults.

The public anger was reignited following the circulation of a viral video showing a man impersonating an ESCOM technician while attempting to fix an electricity fault in an unidentified neighborhood.

In the video, the man, who introduced himself as Saidi, was seen climbing an ESCOM ladder wearing what appeared to be an ESCOM uniform. When questioned by one of the workers at ESCOM, about how he got the ladder and uniform, Saidi admitted that he had borrowed the equipment and was instructed by community members to fix the fault so people could resume using electricity.

The incident has sparked heated debates online, with many customers accusing ESCOM of negligence and forcing desperate communities to take matters into their own hands by hiring unqualified individuals to handle electricity faults.

Netzens flooded in the comment section with complaints, highlighting that ESCOM often takes weeks or even months to respond to simple faults that should be fixed within hours.

“We are left with no choice but to find someone, anyone, to fix the problem, even if it means risking our lives. ESCOM doesn’t care,” one commenter wrote.

Meanwhile, ESCOM has repeatedly complained about the theft of its working equipment, including key electrical tools and materials used for power line maintenance and fault repairs.
