Ras Chikomeni David Chirwa, who had earlier announced his intention to contest in the September 16, 2025 general election, has now withdrawn from the race, citing financial difficulties.

Chirwa explained that his decision not to contest this year does not signal the end of his political ambitions. He stated that he plans to run in the 2030 presidential election instead.

He revealed that his inability to raise the required K10 million to obtain nomination documents from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) was the primary reason behind his withdrawal from the 2025 race.

Chirwa previously attempted to run for president in the 2019 tripartite elections but did not succeed. He later supported the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). In the 2020 presidential re-run, he again failed to contest and was aligned with the Tonse Alliance. This year, he is once again believed to be backing the DPP.

As of now, 14 individuals have successfully obtained nomination papers from MEC, confirming their intention to contest in the upcoming September 16, 2025 presidential election.
